Promoters Spotlight

Mahila Sahayatra is the creation of 93 dedicated Nepalese women from all walks of life. To better understand Sahayatra’s guiding force, each of our promoters will be highlighted monthly on a rotating basis.

Urmila Shrestha

"Women are the core of the family – they drive Nepalese society."

Urmila is the chairwoman of Mahila Sahayatra Microfinance. Leading by example, Sahayatra is a model of how Nepalese women can be empowered to work at a high, professional level to effect national change. Sahayatra is envisioned as a not-for-profit vehicle of social development. She hopes that the bank’s clients themselves will become the agents of a social change on a national level. Urmila is proud of Sahayatra’s efforts to specifically reach out to those least accessible, including youth and migrant workers.

Promoter Binita Sharma's View

We wanted to show that women can also do simple yet effective things on their own and we thought that the best way would be through Mahila Sahayatra. We also wanted to prove that it is not difficult to bring about change and said change does not have to be confined to our male counterparts.

Microfinance is very effective as it targets the grassroot levels of our economy and we believe that even a small helping hand at this stage will help towards greater stability and independence.
i hope that sahayatra will be a driving force towards women empowerment not only for underprevilideged classes but for women across the whole spectrum.
sahayatra needs to target the most underpreviledged classes with support in fields like animal husbandry, agriculture, tailoring and even small cottege industries.
